Dickson Supports Fuel Poverty Awareness Day – Friday 15th February

East Antrim MLA, Stewart Dickson, has expressed his support for Fuel Poverty Awareness Day, and those who face the daily choice of ‘heat or eat’ in the UK.

Mr Dickson commented: ‘In 2019, it is a national scandal that around 4 million homes in the UK are in fuel poverty. More can, and must be done to help people, particularly the vulnerable.

The UK has some of the worst fuel poverty rates in the EU. In fact, countries like Sweden and Finland, which are much colder than the UK, and the Netherlands, which has a similar climate, have fuel poverty rates that are around half of the rate here.

Clearly we have a problem not only with fuel poverty, but poverty and inequality in general, if people cannot afford to heat or improve their homes, we will never be able to solve this problem. The UK Government therefore has to start taking the issue of inequality, poverty and poor housing seriously, rather paying lip-service to what is a national crisis of cold homes.
