Dickson Reports on Elections at Council of Europe

Alliance East Antrim MLA, Stewart Dickson, has reported to the Council of Europe the results of monitoring of elections in Georgia and San Marino.

Speaking at the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe, Mr Dickson expressed a positive outlook on for both regions.

Mr Dickson commented: “As Election Monitors we seek to check and learn from other electoral processes in countries across Europe. We also want to provide support and advice to fledgling democracies on how best to move from authoritarianism to liberal democracy.

The progress made in parts of Eastern Europe is heartening to advocates of democracy worldwide, and we will continue the important work of advising and supporting into the future. It is also clear that even the UK could learn from electoral practices across Europe, to address problems that we see in our own system of elections and representation.
