Dickson Says ‘Safety First’ When it Comes to Tumble Dryers
East Antrim Alliance MLA, Stewart Dickson, is calling on householders to remember 'Safety First' when using tumble dryers.
In recent weeks, certain models of Whirlpool owned tumble dryer brands such as Hotpoint, Proline, Creda, Indesit and Swan have been recalled, after numerous fires were reportedly caused by unmodified machines.
Mr Dickson commented: “In the interests of safety it really is important people check if their tumble dryer is part of the recall, and be reassured that a replacement will be arranged for free.
“I would also like to draw attention to tumble dryer safety in general and Electrical Safety First’s campaign: ‘Don’t Get Into A Tumble With Safety’. Tumble dryers are a great modern convenience but they can cause fires if we do not take care to use and maintain them properly.”
Key points for Tumble Dryer safety:
Never overload the dryer – take large or bulky items like duvets to the dry cleaners.
Always allow each drying programme, including the "cool down cycle", to complete fully.
If you have to stop the dryer before the end of the cycle remove all items and leave the door open to dissipate heat.
Don't use it to dry clothes that are contaminated with combustible substances like solvents, grease, oils or fats.
Don't leave your tumble dryer running overnight or when you are out.
